  • It's upsetting to learn that David has passed away, and my thoughts are with him and his family. I taught at Tolworth school over ten years ago now, and I still have fond memories of David, who was always so jolly and jovial. I remember that our pupils held him in much respect, and he frequently gave up his own time to provide them with extra support. His talents were prized elsewhere as he engaged in support work with other schools to help them improve. He, along with the other senior leaders at Tolworth, had a marked impact on my own professional development and I hope that I carry his, and their, vision of education forward. - Jed Stone

  • David Hickman was an inspirational teacher. Biology was certainly not my favourite subject at GCSE, but under his teaching at A-level I fell in love with the subject. He was incredibly passionate and cared deeply about each and everyone of his students. He ultimately inspired me to go on to study Biology at university. Upon graduation I contacted David with my wish to become a science teacher, he was so supportive and even helped me arrange work experience at Tolworth. I am now very proud to say I am Head of Biology at a wonderful school, which would not have been possible without the support and guidance he gave me at 6th form and beyond. Rest in peace Sir, your legacy lives on in all your students who gained so much from having you as a teacher. - Charlotte Kent
  • Such terrible news. Probably one of the best teachers, he made science so fun and interesting to students, like myself, who were disengaged in the subject! I will always remember you :) Chloe Parsons, 2009 sixth form leaver. - Chloe Parsons
  • It's so sad to see a person go i am sure he was a great teacher and i hope he is happy in heaven i am sure any friends or family have him by there side all the time and i would like to say farewell and see you again hope fully in memory of David Hickman.... :) - Molly Murnane
  • Mr. Hickman was a phenomenal teacher! I'll never forget how hard he tried to help me catch up on my Science GCSE when I registered to school 4 months before my final exams. So much passion in his teaching and even then you could clearly tell that he cared for student well being. It didn't help that we weren't the easiest bunch to teach. What stood out the most for me was that even when we were at our worst, he would apologize in a split second if he told us off. I'm training to be a teacher now and I can't imagine ever being as humble and inspiring as he was. I remember science lab lessons like it was just yesterday! RIP Mr Hickman! You will definitely be remembered. - Mandy Arthur
  • Dear Ian I am so sorry to hear about David's passing. Unfortunately, I did not work with David for very long but I was clear he was an exceptional man. I was struck by his kindness, thoughtfulness and integrity. We will really miss him! Love, Damian - Damian Mitchelmore
  • David was such a kind and gentle man. I knew him first as a science teacher. His dedication to his subject was second to none. He went above and beyond, putting on lessons before morning registration so that the three of us studying for the higher paper at that time could learn our course material. I was not a huge fan of the 7.30am lessons but they did the trick and I came out with my 'A' grade. Then I knew him in a different capacity; work colleague then line manager. Here I soon discovered his wicked sense of humour and his compassion. Such a wonderful man. David, thank you and I will miss you. - Natalie Osborne
  • David oversaw my NQT programme at Tolworth Girls' school. I will always remember how supportive and understanding he was of us as newly qualified teachers but also the clear passion he had for looking after all students within the school. I will never forget my final observation that year. I was teaching tabloid newspaper articles to year 7 and David not only gave me constructive and flattering feedback but also went to the trouble of writing his own article about my lesson and the learning that had taken place. I often re-tell this story and it opitimises the way that David went above and beyond for people at school. He was a truly lovely man to work with. - Rebecca Powling
  • I worked at Tolworth for only a year but that was enough to know that David was a very kind and decent man. I know that he gave his all to the school and the pupils and may he rest in peace. - Mushtaque Ali
  • What a brilliant teacher... always remembered him since I left in 1999 - Sophie Tattum
